Book Cover: The Empress in the Pepper Chamber
This is the first of three covers that I designed for my design internship at UW Press. The Empress in the Pepper Chamber is about Zhao Feiyan and the Silk Pillow writings during the Han Dynasty, so the author felt that the cover should feel, "rich, powerful, dramatic, and lurid". She was also very specific that image should dictate a woman and a man in a court setting.

In reading the introduction and the cover design memo from the author I got a pretty good idea of what they pictured the book to look like but as this book is based in an older time finding relevant images proved difficult.

The three previous refinements became the cover options and were shown at the final cover meeting and this option was chosen.
